I love teaching.
I love the relationships I build with my students. I love watching them finally understand something they’ve been struggling with. I love the laughter, the conversations, and those little moments that remind me why I chose this career.
And I also want more financial freedom.
Both can be true.
For a long time, I think I felt like wanting more income somehow meant I wasn’t grateful for the career I had.
But that’s not how I see it anymore.
I can love teaching AND want another source of income.
I can be grateful for my paycheck AND want more financial breathing room.
I can love walking into my classroom AND want the option to retire at 60.
I can enjoy the life I have today AND build more choices for tomorrow.
Both can be true.
I Wasn’t Looking for Another Job
As a teacher, the obvious answer to needing more money often seems to be working more hours.
Tutor after school. Teach summer school. Pick up another job on the weekends.
But I was already working full time. I didn’t want to fill every available hour with more work just to earn a little extra money.
I wanted to find another way.
I wanted to learn how to create income that wasn’t completely tied to the number of hours I could work.
So, in my 50s, while still teaching full time, I started learning new skills.
Was I an expert? Absolutely not.
Did I know exactly what I was doing when I started? Nope.
But I was willing to learn.
And little by little, I began creating income outside of my teacher paycheck.
What I Really Wanted Was Choice
I’ve realized that financial freedom means something different to everyone.
For me, it isn’t about becoming rich.
It’s about having choices.
The choice to pay off debt faster.
The choice to travel and visit family.
The choice to spend more time with the people I love.
The choice to enjoy being a grandma (or a Granjo).
And eventually, the choice to retire because I’m ready—not simply because a number on a calendar says I can.
Maybe I’ll reach 60 and decide I’m not ready to leave teaching.
Wouldn’t that be a wonderful decision to get to make?
That’s what I’m working toward.
Not an escape plan.
A choice plan.
You Are Allowed to Want Both
Maybe you’re a teacher who loves what you do, too.
But maybe you’ve also looked at your retirement account and wondered if you’ve saved enough.
Maybe you’re tired of living paycheck to paycheck.
Maybe you’d simply like a little extra breathing room each month.
Wanting those things doesn’t take anything away from how much you care about your students or your career.
You are allowed to want both.
You can love your job AND build something of your own.
You can appreciate what you have AND work toward something more.
You can be happy with your life today AND dream about what you’d like your future to look like.
Both can be true.
I started learning how to make money online in my 50s while working full time as a teacher. And one of the biggest things I’ve learned is that you don’t have to change your entire life overnight.
Sometimes you just have to be willing to learn one new skill.
Then take one small step.
And then another.
Because one small step today can create a lot more choices tomorrow.
