If someone had told me twenty years ago that I would be teaching full-time while building multiple online income streams from home, I probably would have smiled politely and thought, “That sounds nice, but that’s not for people like me.”
At the time, I was raising four children, juggling work, paying bills, and doing my best to provide for my family. Like so many people, I believed that earning more money meant working more hours.
I dreamed there was another option, but could never quite crack the code.
My Search Started Long Before Affiliate Marketing
My journey into online business didn’t begin overnight.
In fact, it began back in 2004.
Even then, I found myself wondering if there was a way to earn income online. I wasn’t looking to get rich quickly. I wasn’t trying to quit my job.
I simply wanted more choices for my family and my future.
The problem was that life was busy.
Between raising four kids and working full-time, there wasn’t much extra time to learn something completely new. So, like many dreams, that idea stayed on the back burner for years.
Even though I set it aside, I never stopped believing there had to be another way.
A Second Career That I Love
Teaching became my second career, and I truly love it.
There is something incredibly rewarding about watching students grow in confidence and discover they can do hard things.
But like many teachers, I also understood the financial challenges that come with the profession.
No matter how much I loved my job, I didn’t want my paycheck to determine every financial decision I made for the rest of my life.
I wanted to create more choices.
Finally Deciding to Learn
Years later, I made a decision that changed everything.
Instead of continuing to wonder if making money online was possible, I invested in learning.
I’ll be honest—I had a lot to learn.
There were new terms, new technology, and moments when I questioned whether I could really do it.
But I reminded myself of something I often tell my students:
You don’t have to know everything before you begin.
You simply have to be willing to learn.
One step at a time, I started understanding how online businesses work.
That’s when I discovered affiliate and digital marketing.
So…What Is Affiliate Marketing?
Before I started, I assumed affiliate marketing sounded complicated.
It really isn’t.
Affiliate marketing is simply recommending products, tools, or programs you genuinely believe in. When someone purchases through your referral link, you may earn a commission at no additional cost to them.
Think about how often we recommend things in everyday life.
A favorite restaurant.
A great book.
A helpful app.
A kitchen gadget that actually works.
Affiliate marketing allows you to earn a commission when your recommendation helps someone make a purchase.
It’s really that simple.
Why I Wish I Had Started Sooner
Looking back, I don’t wish I had started sooner because of the money.
I wish I had started sooner because of what it gave me.
It gave me confidence that I could learn something new.
It gave me hope that retirement didn’t have to look the way I once imagined.
It gave me flexibility.
It gave me another income stream outside of my teaching salary.
Most of all, it gave me more choices.
To me, that’s what financial freedom really means.
Not owning a mansion.
Not quitting your job tomorrow.
Not becoming an overnight success.
It’s having choices.
The choice to pay off debt.
The choice to save more for retirement.
The choice to help your family.
The choice to travel.
The choice to keep doing work you love because you want to—not because you have to.
Ironically, building additional income has made me appreciate teaching even more.
Knowing I’m working toward a future with more options has allowed me to enjoy the present without carrying the same financial stress.

What I’ve learned is that you don’t have to be a technology expert or have a huge social media following to get started.
